FAQ

Material Choice

Our fire pits are made with longevity in mind at an affordable price point, so we have thoughtfully chosen several options.

Corten Weathering Steel

Corten Weathering Steel

This is an industrial steel used in structural applications for bridges, seaport buildings, and oil derricks, but its just as well known for it’s beauty and patina as it ages.

As you can see in the picture the patina changes with age from a bright orange in the first few months to a dark brown and will last decades. This material can last a lifetime. Your fire pit will arrive with no patina.

Hot Rolled, Pickled & Oiled

Or HRPO for short, this steel is also used in structural applications for its economic benefits and high strength. Hot rolled steel comes out of the kiln with mill scale, this is then acid washed and oiled to protect the metal.

Our HRPO fire pits are made in both 11ga and 7ga thick material. This allows for more portability due to the lighter weight or more longevity with a thicker material. Either way our fire pits will allow for years of enjoyment and use.

How to set up the Cinder Fire Pit

Should I get Corten Weathering Steel or HRPO?

Without getting into too much detail, research has shown there to be no distinct advantage for Corten Weathering Steel over HRPO along saltwater coast lines. Thus, we would recommend the HRPO steel Cinder Fire Pit for those living within 20 miles of saltwater. Additionally, if your area regularly has high humidity levels above 80% for more than 60% of the year, the advantages diminish. It should also be noted that regional differences can vary highly even in short distances. Still, for the mass majority of the US, Corten Weathering Steel will be the better option.

How should I put the fire out?

We would recommend you let the coals burn out on their own. Throwing water on the fire won’t hurt anything, but the ashes will make a mess and hold moisture, so you should clean and dry your fire pit after doing so.

Is it safe to use the Cinder Fire Pit on a deck?

We do not recommend using it on a deck. We suggest using it over sand, fire brick, or concrete. It should also be a level surface.

How far from structures should I place my fire pit?

You should follow your local ordinances, but we would recommend at least 10 feet from buildings and overhanging structures.

Do you paint or apply a protective coating to your fire pits?

We do not. We have yet to find a coating that will last for more than a year without reapplication. However, our fire pits use a thick and quality steel that will form a protective patina. We do continue to test new products though.

Do you have a warranty?

Kraftig CNC has a limited lifetime warranty on all our fire pits. It covers any workmanship and material defects. It does not cover normal wear or misuse. View our warranty here.
